Dealing with customs changes since the UK left the European Union can take some getting used to. However, it is often necessary to get someone to deal with customs for you, particularly as new rules apply to the EU.
Many businesses hire a person or business with specialist knowledge to deal with customs issues when trading goods internationally.
These could be freight forwarders, customs agents, customs agents or brokers or fast parcel operators.
They’ll need to be established in the UK for customs to meet a number of customs rules. This includes being able to get a wide range of customs authorisations and simplifications.
Freight forwarders
If your business is using a freight forwarder, they will arrange clearing your goods through customs. They’ll have the right software to communicate with HMRC’s systems.
Customs agent or broker
Customs agents and brokers make sure goods clear through customs enroute to their final destination.
Fast parcels operators
As part of their service, they will often complete the import or export declarations on your behalf. Items that they transport include documents, parcels and even freight, but some goods are not allowed including foods or chemicals.
It is important they are given accurate details about the goods so that they can complete any import or export declarations correctly.
When using an agent for international trading you will need to provide them with:
- An EORI number
- Invoices or contracts which are evidence of any goods you intend to import or export
- A description of the goods you import or export
- Any licences that may be appropriate or certification of restricted goods.
- You’ll need to check with the person or business doing customs for you whether you need to provide anything else.
Get the agreement in writing
Any agent cannot act on your behalf without written permission and must show whether they’re acting for you directly or indirectly. HMRC will only ask for evidence of the authorisation if we need it.
